Abstract
The cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon gracile was sampled from the brackish water at Gangsuji Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea. The trichomes of A. gracile were free-floating and solitary. The akinetes were cylindrical with rounded ends, existed alone or rarely in pairs, and were distributed 1~7 cells away from heterocyte. The most distinguishing feature of A. gracile was the cup-shaped sheath at both ends of the akinete, which was open towards adjacent vegetative cells. Using unialgal cultured 4 strains, the cup-shaped sheaths at both ends of the akinete were induced under shaking culture with BG-11 medium diluted 1 ¡¿ 10-1. In the phylogenetic analyses using 16S rRNA and rpoB genes, the Korean A. gracile strains formed the same clade with the previously reported A. gracile. Their genetic similarities were high as 98.5~99.9%. Therefore, the Aphanizomenon strains were identified and reported as A. gracile, which was an unrecorded species from Korea.
